The South African Chapter of the International Institute of Business Analysis (IIBA® – SA) is holding its first annual conference on 3-5 September in Johannesburg. Business Analysis Summit Southern Africa (BASSA2012) is the first conference aimed specifically at the profession of Business Analysis in South Africa. It is expected to be an exciting knowledge and information exchange forum for Business Analysts and any person impacted by or concerned with the profession of business analysis.
The International Institute of Business Analysis (IIBA®) is the professional body serving the growing number of professional Business Analysts worldwide. The main activities of the IIBA® include the development of a globally recognised Body of Knowledge (BABOK®) and the establishment of international certifications for the professional Business Analyst. The South African chapter (IIBA®-SA) exists within the broader structure and goals of the IIBA®, but focuses more specifically on the needs of the South African community of professional Business Analysts.

The profession of business analysis is growing very fast with membership of the international body having reached 25 000 members in more that 60 countries in only eight years. The South African Chapter with nearly 500 members is one of the larger and more active chapters in the world.
BASSA2012 affords participants the opportunity to share knowledge and experiences and learn about and debate the issues that relate to this fast-evolving profession.

The theme of the conference will address the role of the professional Business Analyst as an enabler for effective business change. “The work of the Business Analyst almost always results in significant business change, and in many organisations around the world, mature Business Analysts take responsibility, on behalf of the business, for ensuring that this change will drive out business value,” says Steve Erlank, President of the IIBA®-SA and conference Chair. “A major focus of BASSA2012 will therefore be to explore the many dimensions to how business analysts, and the companies that employ them, can achieve this.”

“The main style of the conference is not particularly academic or vendor-focussed and instead will be oriented towards the profession and practice of business analysis,” says Erlank. The programme will inlcude a mix of expert speakers, organisational case-studies presented by practicing business analysts, panel discussions and workshops that will provide learning and networking opportunities for every attendee.

Being the first conference, limited seating is available and the conference is expected to be oversubscribed.

The conference will have several tracks oriented towards topics targeted at Business Anlaysts with different levels of experience, ranging from the novice Business Analyst seeking to plan a career, to a manager looking to understand the value proposition of business analysts and how to manage them, to the professional Business Analyst wishing to understand and debate advanced techniques and network with fellow professionals.

This conference will only be the second business analysis conference on the African continent, the first being held in Nigeria in November last year.

Certificate Programme in Business Analysis now endorsed by IIBA®

Faculty Training Institute, leading training provider of Business Analysis qualifications in South Africa, is pleased to announce the endorsement by International Institute of Business Analysis (IIBA®) of its Certificate Programme in Business Analysis. FTI is the only Endorsed Education Provider (EEP®) with Charter status in South Africa.
The International Institute of Business Analysis (IIBA®) is a professional body dedicated to the development and maintenance of standards for the practice of Business Analysis, and for the certification and recognition of practitioners. On a recent visit to South Africa, President and CEO of the IIBA®, Kathleen Barrett, addressed Business Analysts on the importance of an accreditation programme for Business Analysts and stressed the IIBA’s commitment to ensuring effective contributions are made by the profession through the formalisation of standards and implementation of a certification programme for qualified practitioners known as CBAP®.

The Certificate Programme in Business Analysis offered by FTI carries a CDU rating of 99 which may be claimed when applying to write the CBAP® certification. More that 100 delegates from leading companies have completed the inaugural Certificate programmes hosted last year.

The course comprises the theoretical component of FTI’s landmark Diploma in Business Analysis. The Diploma in Business Analysis carries a CDU rating of 150 towards CBAP®. “The Certificate programme, which follows the same rich, intensive learning methodology as the Diploma, was originally launched to fill the growing needs of entry level business analysts who were not yet eligible for the Diploma, usually because they were not able to gain access to workplace projects that the senior programme requires” says Steve Erlank, MD of FTI.

The endorsement from the IIBA of FTI’s Business Analysis part time programmes and their respective CDU ratings provides delegates with the assurance that the content of the 4-month certificate and the 6-month Diploma programmes covers much of the content of the Business Analysis Body of Knowledge (BABOK®) and is compliant with version 2.0, released earlier this year.

“Basing the course on this standard ensures that delegates are exposed to the latest certified practices and methodologies in the field. As a training provider, we have a adopted a process for continuous improvement that includes reviewing and evaluating course content and instructor led delivery mechanisms.” says Erlank

“Furthermore, the ongoing endorsement and EEP® charter status ensures that the training institution itself is credible with the necessary systems and processes in place to offer learning programmes which are aligned with IIBA® best practice and that meet the highest quality standards” Says Erlank

Faculty Training Institute has a 21 year track record of providing training excellence and skills development to knowledge professionals. This community comprises not only professional individuals within the IT industry but also professional individuals from industries and knowledge domains where high order thinking and the ability to innovate and solve problems is prized.

About Faculty Training Institute

Faculty Training Institute (FTI) is a private training company that specialises in offering world-class career-oriented training courses for professional knowledge workers, mainly in the corporate world. Focusing on mid-career rather than entry-level training, FTI specialises in Project Management, Business Analysis, Systems Analysis, Technical Writing, IT Management, Enterprise Architecture, and Technical Writing Training. It offers a variety of training options, including public or in-house, part-time or full-time courses.

FTI was founded in 1989 by five experienced lecturers from the Department of Information Systems at the University of Cape Town, who perceived a gap between the technical or entry level training offered by most private training companies, and the longer degree programmes offered by tertiary institutions. During the past 20 years FTI has expanded its successful product offerings from the initial two Diploma courses into growing range of diplomas and short courses that serve the career needs of corporate South Africa.

In October 2006 FTI was awarded Charter Endorsed Education Provider (EEP) status with the International Institute for Business Analysis (IIBA®). It is one of a handful of training organisations worldwide who have achieved this status. FTI has also received full accreditation from ISETT SETA.
